Fair Trade School

Becoming a Fairtrade School means joining a worldwide movement – a movement where young people learn that, whatever their age, they have the power to make a difference in the world.

It offers a great opportunity to look at global issues such as where our food comes from and how we are connected to people around the world. Students can also learn a range of skills, from teamwork and co-operation to persuasive writing to running a stall or tuck shop.

Teaching about Fairtrade supports different curriculum areas, especially Geography, Citizenship and PSHE (https://schools.fairtrade.org.uk/fairtrade-schools-awards/).

Miss Sherwood has already organised and held a Fairtrade assembly.  We had two speakers in from:

Justicia - Bolton's Fair Trade shop

Justicia is a social enterprise operating as a not-for-profit company set up in 1985.

We sell  beautiful, useful and desirable items  made by people in the developing world  which helps them out of the poverty cycle.  Without fair trade people would never have this opportunity.  We also stock a greater variety of fairly traded food than you will see in any shop in Bolton.

Our customers tell us that our shop is a delight with unique gifts available for special occasions as well as practical items of houseware for everyday use.  We also carry a range of locally made eco-friendly items alongside a strong range of Ecover household products.

We provide goods on a Sale or Return basis and we enjoy attending outside events such as markets and fairs.

We give talks to outside groups.

We support schools by delivering lessons and assemblies.

Our volunteers are an invaluable support to our work in our shop, stockroom and at outside events.

We have also held a Fairtrade event - we raised almost £100.  The Fairtrade Fortnight was covered by all teachers in class earlier this year from 22nd February to 7th March.

WE ARE A FAIRAWARE SCHOOL! WE ARE A FAIRAWARE SCHOOL!

We are hoping to become a Fair active school where we need to encourage our community and parents to buy Fairtrade produce to help farmers and other workers in poor countries.
