At Haslam Park Primary School, we believe that every child has the power to make a positive difference, both within our local community and across the wider world.
We are proud to be a FairAware School, and we are continuing our Fairtrade journey as we work towards achieving FairActive status.
Through Fairtrade education, we help our pupils understand fairness, equality, sustainability and the importance of making informed, responsible choices.
Our Fairtrade work supports our curriculum, strengthens pupils' personal development and provides meaningful opportunities for leadership, teamwork and active citizenship.
Learning About Fairtrade
Fairtrade education helps children understand how everyday products, including bananas, chocolate and coffee, connect us to farmers and workers around the world.
Through Geography, English, Mathematics, PSHE and other curriculum areas, pupils explore global trade, responsible consumption, environmental sustainability and the importance of fair treatment.
Children develop important skills, including critical thinking, communication, empathy, problem-solving and collaboration.
We encourage our pupils not only to learn about global challenges but also to consider how they can contribute to positive change.
Our Fairtrade Achievements
Achieving FairAware Status
We are delighted to have achieved FairAware status, recognising our school's engagement with Fairtrade education and our commitment to raising awareness of fair and ethical trade.
Fairtrade Assemblies and Community Partnerships
Miss Sherwood has organised a Fairtrade assembly, during which we welcomed two representatives from Justicia, Bolton's Fair Trade shop.
Justicia is a not-for-profit social enterprise established in 1985, supporting ethical trade through the sale of fairly traded products.
The visit provided a valuable opportunity for pupils to learn about Fairtrade from members of our local community and explore how shopping choices can affect producers around the world.
Fairtrade Fortnight and Fundraising
Our pupils have previously taken part in Fairtrade Fortnight, exploring fairness, global trade and sustainability through classroom learning.
We also held a successful Fairtrade event, raising almost £100.
These experiences helped to bring our school community together and provided opportunities for children to develop their understanding of responsible citizenship.
November 2026 – Our Fairtrade Mini Market and Awareness Event
Small Choices, Big Difference!
We are excited to be planning a special Fairtrade Mini Market and Awareness Event in November 2026, bringing together pupils, parents, carers and our wider school community.
The event will form part of our continuing journey towards FairActive status and will provide opportunities for pupils to put their learning into action.
Our School Council and Eco Committee will help plan and promote the event, encouraging children to take ownership of activities and share important messages about fairness and sustainability.
Our Fairtrade Mini Market
We plan to organise a small Fairtrade market featuring a selection of Fairtrade-certified products.
Pupils will have opportunities to help with preparing displays, promoting products, discussing prices and welcoming visitors.
This will support the development of practical mathematical skills, financial understanding, teamwork, communication and enterprise.
The market will also encourage families to recognise the FAIRTRADE Mark and understand how their purchasing choices can support fairer trading relationships.
From Farm to Shop – Our Eco Committee
Our Eco Committee will help create an educational display exploring where everyday products come from and how they reach our shops.
Using maps, pictures and information, pupils will investigate the journeys of products such as bananas and cocoa.
They will explore how farming, trade and environmental sustainability are connected and consider the importance of protecting both people and the planet.
This activity will strengthen geographical knowledge and encourage pupils to think critically about responsible consumption.
Fairtrade Poster Competition
We are planning a whole-school poster competition with the theme:
"Small Choices, Big Difference!"
Children will be encouraged to design eye-catching posters promoting fairness, ethical trade and sustainability.
This will provide an opportunity for pupils to express their understanding creatively while developing persuasive language and communication skills.
Selected posters will be displayed during our November event, celebrating pupils' learning and raising awareness across the school community.
Our Fairtrade Promise Tree
As part of the event, pupils and families will be invited to contribute to a Fairtrade Promise Tree.
Each person will be encouraged to make a simple pledge, such as:

Looking for the FAIRTRADE Mark when shopping.

Learning more about where food comes from.

Supporting ethical and sustainable products where possible.

Reducing unnecessary waste.

Sharing Fairtrade information with friends and family.
The completed tree will provide a visual reminder of how individual choices can contribute to positive change.
Pupil Leadership – Our School Council and Eco Committee
Pupil voice is an important part of school life at Haslam Park Primary School.
Our School Council and Eco Committee provide opportunities for children to contribute ideas, develop leadership skills and participate in decisions that affect their school community.
School Council
As part of our November Fairtrade event, our School Council will be invited to help organise activities, promote the event, gather pupil ideas and support the Mini Market.
Through this involvement, pupils will have opportunities to develop confidence, teamwork, communication and decision-making skills.
They will also gain practical experience of democracy, responsibility and representing the views of others.
Eco Committee
Our Eco Committee will focus on the environmental aspects of Fairtrade, exploring sustainability, responsible consumption and the connections between farming and the environment.
Pupils will help raise awareness through displays, discussions and activities that encourage our school community to think carefully about its impact on the planet.
Working Together
By bringing our School Council and Eco Committee together, we aim to ensure that pupils play an active role in our Fairtrade journey.
Rather than simply learning about global issues, children will have opportunities to take meaningful action, share their knowledge and encourage others to make informed choices.
Promoting British Values and Personal Development
Our Fairtrade work contributes to the wider personal development of our pupils and provides opportunities to promote fundamental British values.
Democracy: Pupils contribute ideas and participate in planning through our School Council and Eco Committee.
Individual Liberty: Children learn to make informed choices and understand how their decisions can affect others.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance: Pupils learn about different communities, cultures and experiences, developing empathy and respect.
The Rule of Law: Children explore fairness, rights, responsibilities and the importance of rules that protect people.
Our activities also provide opportunities to develop leadership, confidence, resilience, teamwork and a sense of responsibility towards others.
Working Towards FairActive Status
Our November Fairtrade event is an important planned step in our journey from FairAware towards FairActive.
Through pupil-led activities, curriculum learning, awareness campaigns and community involvement, we aim to strengthen our commitment to Fairtrade across the school.
We want our children to recognise that they can use their knowledge, skills and voices to make a meaningful contribution to the world around them.
